Whatever the medical device application for which a thermocouple is used, optimum accuracy and economy are likely to be hallmarks of its performance only if the following recommendations and advisories are heeded:
Select the type that best matches operational requirements.
Provide adequate protection against environmental challenges.
Use the largest practical size.
Install the device in a location that ensures truly representative measurements.
Provide for sufficient immersion depth.
Avoid changing the immersion depth.
Recognize and adapt to the effects of cyclic heating on measurement accuracy.
Establish a preventive maintenance program.
Use wiring components that match the device calibration.
Determine whether the chief goal is accuracy or repeatability of measurement.
Use limit sensors to ensure safe system operation.
