Catching Up with Intel, ON Semiconductor, and Zarlink

A few moves making the rounds recently:

  • Intel is investing $5 billion to build a factory in Chandler, AZ. The company envisions this new facility, Fab 42, becoming the highest-volume chip plant in the world. Construction begins later this year and is slated to finish in 2013. And at a time when other companies are shedding jobs, Intel's move is likely to bring 1000 new ones.
  • Meanwhile, ON Semiconductor will expand in a state close by. The chip maker is spending $30 million to expand its manufacturing plant in Gresham, OR. Company officials say the 8-in. wafer plant will grow by more than 45%.
  • In exactly three months, Zarlink Semiconductor will replace president and CEO Kirk Mandy with COO Gary Tanner. Mandy will be retained as a consultant.
