Yesterday was the first day of Renesas Electronics' DevCon, which is a fascinating event for those in the electronics space. For those who haven't been in the loop, Renesas and NEC merged earlier this year, but it appears that the integration has been fairly simple in the Americas region (there's still work to be done in Japan, apparently).
While I was there, I had an informative discussion with Omid Milani, who is business director of the display business unit, about the company's medical clients (don't worry, no names were mentioned). Medical is the #1 segment for this unit of Renesas (originally NEC LCD Technologies). We also talked about why manufacturers are turning away from CCFLs and into the welcome arms of LEDs for their displays (power consumption, durability, environmental concerns...). This transition is happening in a variety of industries. I wonder what will replace LEDs? —Lawrence Lloyd
