Could Smartphones Kill Standalone Medical Electronic Devices?

Smartphones present a huge opportunity for medical electronics designers, but they also pose challenges for the medical electronics industry. That will be the subject of an AdvaMed webinar sponsored by set to take place later this month.

Designers can tap into a huge consumer market by developing healthcare applications and peripherals for smartphones. However, smartphones could also render standalone devices irrelevant, as we have seen with standalone GPS and MP3 players.

“The question for traditional medical device companies is whether their designers, marketers, and IP staff have factored the smartphone platform into their thinking,” reads a description of the webinar.

To be successful, designers will need to either improve the standalone versions of their devices or converge their designs with smartphones.

The webinar, set for April 26, 2012, at noon EST, will tap into UBM TechInsights to determine where the future is headed.
