David Carey, VP of Technical Intelligence at UBM TechInsights, performed an in-conference teardown of a blood pressure monitor at DesignMED in February. He used the Omron HEM-Solar, a traditional blood pressure monitor with the twist of solar-powered operation. Of particular interest, aside from the sensors/mechanics/pneumatics, is the integration of the solar array and how Omron has brought together a three-way power supply cost-effectively in a consumer-grade medical appliance. For developing countries in which the traditional wall outlet may not be available, the design allows primary cells or the sun's rays to help provide important health related information.
