Custom-manufactured precious-metal-clad wire can be formulated to meet specified OEM performance characteristics such as corrosion resistance, resistance to extreme temperature, and biocompatibility. Anomet Products Inc. metallurgically bonds platinum, silver, or gold to core wire made of such lower-cost materials as copper, Kovar, nickel iron, molybdenum, stainless steel, tantalum, and titanium, creating a smooth-finish wire that is an economical yet functionally equivalent alternative to wire made of solid platinum, silver, or gold. The composite wire is offered in sizes of 0.002 to 0.125 in. OD and also as ribbon up to 1 in. wide. Cladding thickness may be 2% or more. The precious-metal-clad wire is engineered to be more ductile and more amenable to being formed than filled or plated wires. Uses include the fabrication of connectors, microswitches, and other high-reliability medical device components.
